{"id":177,"date":"2018-08-02T09:29:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T09:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baronholidayhomes.com\/blog\/?p=177"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:57:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T10:57:57","slug":"enjoy-a-hands-on-harvest-experience-on-gozo-this-autumn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baronholidayhomes.com\/blog\/enjoy-a-hands-on-harvest-experience-on-gozo-this-autumn\/","title":{"rendered":"Enjoy a hands-on harvest experience on Gozo this autumn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You can taste Gozo\u2019s fascinating history in its cuisine, which combines influences from all over the Mediterranean \u2013 including North African, Sicilian, and French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as getting a taste for Gozitan cuisine, visitors to the island can also get involved in various agritourism activities such as guided estate tours and helping Gozo\u2019s farmers at harvest time \u2013 especially the grape harvest which runs from August to the end of September and the olive harvest in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hands-on experience is an enjoyable way to appreciate what goes into making the island\u2019s award-winning wines and olive oil and makes for a fun autumn activity holiday on Gozo. In this blog post we take a look at the wines and olive oil produced on Gozo and explore the various harvest activities you can get involved with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Wine production in Gozo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/demo-551.avantio.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/wine-tasting-380x350.webp\" alt=\"wine tasting in gozo\" class=\"wp-image-98\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Archaeologists think that wine has been produced on Gozo for around 3,000 years, helped by it\u2019s location in the middle of the Mediterranean sea and with a sunny and warm climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That legacy lives on today in Gozo\u2019s three wineries:&nbsp;<strong>Ta\u2019 Mena Estate<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Tal-Massar Winery<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Marsovin Ramla Valley Estate<\/strong>. All three produce a range of high quality wines characterised by what many call \u2018The Island Effect\u2019 \u2013 a unique taste influenced by the salty breezes that blow across tiny Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, for a small island, 12 different grape varieties are grown on Gozo: Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Chardonnay, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Girgentina, Gellewza, Viognier, Sangiovese, Serkuzan, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are often blended to create a range of wines to suit a variety of local dishes \u2013 from bold to fruity, and from dry to sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An EU wine certification scheme was adopted in 2007 with a DOK (Denominazzjoni ta\u2019 Ori\u0121ini Kontrollata) label for the top quality wines from Malta and Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also an I\u0120T (Indikazzjoni \u0120eografica Tipika) label for those wines from the Maltese Islands that are still of great merit. So look out for Gozo DOK Gozo IGT labels on the wine lists when you\u2019re on holiday on Gozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ta\u2019Mena Estate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 25-acre Ta&#8217; Mena Estate is located in the fertile Marsalforn Valley near Xag\u0127ra. The estate is owned by the Spiteri family who have farmed on Gozo for decades. It comprises more than 10 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove of around 1,500 trees, an orange grove and a fruit garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as producing a range of quality liqueurs, tomato paste, honeys, herbs and preserves, Ta\u2019 Mena produces a range of 12 Gozo D.O.K. certified wines in its modern winery. The estate also produces a unique cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, the family set about creating a sustainable, local agritourism business which aims to teach visitors about traditional crop cultivation as well as food and wine production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/demo-551.avantio.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Grape-harvest-1500x630.jpeg\" alt=\"grape harvest in gozo\" class=\"wp-image-99\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the estate and winery and then sample the estate\u2019s produce. Ta\u2019 Mena also offers private lunches or dinners where you\u2019ll get to taste some seasonal Gozitan dishes to complement the estate\u2019s wines. Children can also meet farm animals, such as goats, and can go on pony cart rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those wanting a more immersive experience can join the estate\u2019s workers at harvest time by booking to join in the grape picking (August\/September) and olive picking (October). You can even get to see the wine making process in the estates\u2019 winery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tal-Massar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tal-massarwinery.business.site\/\"><strong>Tal-<\/strong><strong>Massar Winery<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is located in picturesque countryside near the village of G\u0127arb on Gozo and has a hectare of vines. The owners, Anthony and Marisa Hili are passionate about wine and produce a range of six boutique wines \u2013 three reds, two whites and a rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/demo-551.avantio.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tal-massar-wine-1642x630.jpg\" alt=\"Tal-massar winery wine tatsing\" class=\"wp-image-100\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Wine tasting at Tal-Massar Winery, Gozo. Marisa provides delicious home-cooked food to accompany the tastings. Every Tuesday and Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marsovin Ramla Valley Estate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marsovin company was founded in 1919 and is well known in Malta as a producer of premium wines. The&nbsp;<strong>Marsovin Ramla Valley Estate<\/strong>&nbsp;on Gozo is one of their five vineyards on the Maltese Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ramla Valley estate comprises a vineyard of 4.2 hectares growing Chardonnay grapes exclusively Marsovin\u2019s Antonin Blanc wine. Visitors are able to book vineyard tours and wine tastings (<a href=\"mailto:info@marsovinwinery.com\">info@marsovinwinery.com<\/a>) and are welcome to attend the&nbsp;<strong>Antonin Under The Stars&nbsp;<\/strong>event held at Ramla Valley Estate in August (see section below \u2013 Wine Festivals on Gozo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Olive oil production on Gozo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olives have been cultivated on the Maltese Islands for thousands of years and are an essential part of Mediterranean cuisine and culture. Just as with the local wine industry, Gozo olive oil producers are passionate about continuing the production of high quality olive oil using modern technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British chef and TV personality Jamie Oliver visited the Maltese Islands a few years ago, and visited the Ta\u2019 Mena Estate on Gozo. He was so impressed with the quality of the indigenous Maltese olives that he wondered if they could&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamieoliver.com\/news-and-features\/features\/maltese-olive-oil-worlds-best\/\">possibly be the best in the world<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ramla Valley Olive Oil<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another specialist olive oil producer on Gozo is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ramlavalley\/\">Ramla Valley<\/a>&nbsp;which produces award-winning products at its family-run groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olives are cold pressed on the day of collection, to produce 100% unfiltered extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).
