The beautiful red sandy beaches of&nbsp;<strong>Ramla<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>San Blas Bay<\/strong>&nbsp;are on the east side of Gozo and on the west you have the stunning coastline of&nbsp;<strong>Dwerja Bay<\/strong>&nbsp;to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about Gozo\u2019s northern coast? We think if you\u2019re planning a holiday on Gozo you should definitely make some time to explore the rugged countryside on the north of the island. As well as&nbsp;<strong>secluded valleys and inlets<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find some of Gozo\u2019s most&nbsp;<strong>popular diving spots<\/strong>&nbsp;on the island\u2019s north shore, and there are hundreds of years of tradition to see at Gozo\u2019s famous&nbsp;<strong>salt pans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Walk on the wild side \u2013 explore north Gozo\u2019s scenery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Gozo Coastal Walk<\/strong>&nbsp;circumnavigates the island, offering 50km of walking in total. But you can choose to tackle it in various sections, taking your time to soak up great views of Gozo\u2019s lovely countryside, to swim in a shallow inlet, and to chat to some of the friendly locals you might encounter along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 3 of the walk is an easy 11km and takes you from the village of&nbsp;<strong>San Lawrenz<\/strong>&nbsp;across the top of the island and over to the bustling fishing port of&nbsp;<strong>Marsalforn<\/strong>. It should take around five hours to complete depending on how often you stop to admire the views or take a refreshment break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights of the walk include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Weid il-Meila\u0127\u2014ARCH<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/demo-551.avantio.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Wied-il-Mielah-window-gozo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Rock arch at Wied il-Miela\u0127 on Gozo\u2019s northern coast. Photo credit: VisitGozo.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After heading north from San Lawrenz and passing the village of G\u0127arb, a yellow limestone path takes you to the northern coast. Here you can marvel at the amazing shapes that the wind has carved into the rock along the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Head to the scenic&nbsp;<strong>Weid il-Meila\u0127<\/strong>&nbsp;valley and cross the small bridge at the mouth of the gorge to admire the last remaining rock arch window on Gozo, following the collapse in 2017 of the iconic Azure Window on Gozo\u2019s western coast. This is a great spot to get a good image for Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a renovation project by ecoGozo, the area around the Meilah arch has been made more accessible and safer for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Wied il-G\u0127asri<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Wied l-G\u0127asri, Gozo\" width=\"751\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FvKqEq7aK_I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing east along the coastal path, there are many caves and cliffs to explore until you come to a secluded valley which if you follow it towards the sea turns into the lovely Wied Il-G\u0127asri gorge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stairs have been hewn out of the rock to give access to a little pebble beach. When the tide is in, you can watch the the waves surge down the gorge but it\u2019s mostly peaceful and quiet here \u2013 ideal for a picnic and a swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the best times to visit the Weid il-G\u0127asri valley is in the winter and spring, As well as hiking, it\u2019s possible to explore this area on mountain bikes. Photo credit: VisitGozo.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The coastal walk continues eastwards from the Weid il-G\u0127asri gorge and nearby you\u2019ll come to one of Gozo\u2019s most fascinating sights \u2013 the ancient&nbsp;<strong>salt pans&nbsp;<\/strong>near<strong>&nbsp;Xwejni Bay<\/strong>. If you visit Gozo in the summer you may be able to watch salt being harvested in the traditional way by one of the few Gozitan families who still ply their trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comprising an extensive complex of shallow troughs and channels carved into the flat rock surface, the salt pans here have been used since Roman times to produce organic sea salt. Flanked by wave-like cliffs carved into strange shapes by the sea and wind, the salt pans are particularly picturesque at sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Cave diving on Gozo\u2019s northern coast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gozo\u2019s rocky northern coast has some of the most popular diving sites on the island, including San Dimitri Point, cave diving at Cathedral Cave and Reqqa Point, and the double arch in Xwejni Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAN DIMITRI<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/demo-551.avantio.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Barracuda-Gozo.jpg\" alt=\"barracuda fish\" class=\"wp-image-115\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Barracuda at San Dimitri Point, Gozo. Photo credit: Gozodive.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>San Dimitri<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Point<\/strong>&nbsp;is at the most western location on Gozo. Legend has it that a small chapel fell into the sea here when the cliff collapsed and divers might still hear the bell ringing on the hour!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t see the chapel but you will see plenty of fish including barracuda, groupers, rays and dentex. Divers enter the water from a boat anchored in 6 metres of deep water on a shallow reef before descending via a drop off to around 30 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cathedral Cave<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessed either by boat or via a 10-12 minute swim along Weid il-Ghasri,&nbsp;<strong>Cathedral Cave<\/strong>&nbsp;offers a safe place for inexperienced divers to try cave diving. The cave features a large domed air-filled vault where divers can surface and try out the acoustics. And a second hole lets in additional light creating a beautiful blue \u2013 perfect for some underwater photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reqqa Point<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Located between Weid il-Ghasri and the salt pans at Xwejni Bay,&nbsp;<strong>Reqqa Point<\/strong>&nbsp;is a rocky outcrop where divers can descend into a series of underwater caves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This short video clip from one of Gozo\u2019s main diving operators \u2013 St Andrew\u2019s Divers Cove \u2013 should give you a taste of what you might see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Reqqa Point Dive with St. Andrews Divers Cove, Gozo\" width=\"751\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z0TtOIdmeWc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Bottleneck Cave<\/strong>: This cave is for experienced divers only, dropping down to 58 metres via a narrow vertical chimney. Once at the sandy bottom, divers can follow a narrow tunnel leading to the bottom of the cliff where they can enjoy a spectacular view looking up towards Reqqa Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Billingshurt Cave<\/strong>: Another challenging dive for experienced divers, this cavern is accessed via a 2 metre jump from shore in flat, calm conditions. Limited natural light means torches must be used to see the marine life, including sponges, shrimp and anemones. Average depth of the cave is around 40 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Xwejni Bay<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just 200 metres offshore in&nbsp;<strong>Xwejni Bay&nbsp;<\/strong>lies an unusual&nbsp;<strong>Double Arch&nbsp;<\/strong>that can be explored safely by divers of all abilities.
