There are so many reasons to visit Gozo for a well-earned holiday. There’s our wonderful coastline with secluded bays and safe beaches surrounded by the sparkling Mediterranean sea. Gozitans are friendly and always have time for visitors.
Then there’s our fascinating ancient heritage and baroque churches. And you can indulge in so many, activities – from walking and hiking to abseiling, scuba diving and paddleboarding.
But there’s another important reason to add to this list: our unique cuisine and locally-produced wines and beers! You can taste Gozo’s history in our rich and varied dishes, influenced by the many cultures that have ruled the island over the centuries.
The local cuisine on Gozo is a mouth-watering fusion of Mediterranean flavours, with influences from Sicily, North Africa, and the Middle East. What’s more, Gozo produces a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood.
This blog post outlines how Baron Holiday Homes can help you make the most of your Gozo holiday. Whether you’re a first time visitor or a regular, there’s always something new to savour on Gozo. And we have a few great services that might tempt your taste buds.
Fresh and local

The food culture on Gozo is all about keeping it fresh and local – and using traditional techniques to create preserves and liquors. Local bakeries produce mouth watering local favourite snacks like pastizzi pastries and our version of the pizza – the ftira. And our cafes, bars and restaurants offer a wide range of delicious dishes from platters of antipasti to hearty rabbit stews, lampuki (dorado), and macaroni dishes like Timpana.
Food also plays an important part in Gozo’s cultural calendar. Whatever time of year you visit our island, you’ll find food is an integral part of the celebrations. Anyone who has attended a village festa in the summer will have seen (and hopefully tasted) the much-loved sweet date pastries (imqaret), and chewy nougat (qubbajt).
At Easter and Christmas Gozitans love to snack on sweet desserts– Easter figolli, Christmas qagħaq tal-għasel (honey rings), cassata (ricotta filled sponge with marzipan) or aknnoli (ricotta pastries).
You’ll find Our guide to a Gozo taste experience useful in translating some of the Maltese names for various foods you’ll come across. But our best advice? Just dive in and enjoy!
