If you’ve been waiting impatiently to plan that well-deserved holiday on Gozo then the good news is that the summer 2022 should see a return to normal service.

Although, of course, adults arriving in Malta will need to show proof of full vaccination. And it is advised that you check the current travel requirements set out by the Maltese Government.

As Gozo doesn’t have an airport, visitors must fly to Malta International Airport (MLA) and get ferry connections across to Gozo. Airlines flying to MLA from a wide selection of European destinations include Air Malta, Lufthansa, RyanAir (Malta Air), easyJet and Wizz Air plus other major airlines such as Air France, ITA and British Airways.

In this blog post we give an overview of the latest flight options to Malta and explain how easy it is to get to your Baron Holiday Home on Gozo.

Malta International Airport

In February 2022 MLA celebrated an important milestone – the 30th anniversary  of the opening of its terminal building. Over the decades the airport has benefited from significant investment and expansion. And in 2019 the airport reported it had handled a record 7.3 million passengers, of which 2.8 million were tourists. Then, as we all know, in early 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic hit and flights were halted.

MLA’s plans for 2022 include a new food court and customs area – both projects aim to enhance the customer experience.

London Gatwick reopens Terminal 2

After being closed for the past two years, London Gatwick’s Terminal 2 will recommence operations on Sunday 27 March. Airlines running flights from Terminal 2 include AirMalta, RyanAir, easyJet, British Airways and Turkish Airlines.

Malta’s national carrier Air Malta is based at MLA and intends to resume direct flights to London Gatwick, Madrid and Moscow Sheremetyevo airports from 27 March 2022.

There will be a daily service to London Gatwick, three flights a week to Madrid, and two flights each week to Moscow. In 2022 Air Malta will be operating more than 250 flights every week to 20 destinations, including 15 services a week to London Heathrow.

New routes to Malta in 2022

Some airlines have responded to the pent-up demand for Mediterranean holidays by increasing the number of routes to Malta. This should mean European tourists booking their Gozo holidays will have a great choice of flights. The new routes include:

RyanAir – Two new routes to Malta from Shannon and Bordeaux. This increases its total number of Maltese routes to more than 60 from destinations all across Europe.

EasyJet – A new route from Bristol Airport to Malta will operate twice weekly from July 2022. EasyJet also flies to Malta direct from Manchester and Gatwick plus European cities such as Brussels, Madrid, Paris and Amsterdam.

Jet2 – Serves Malta from a number of UK regional airports such as East Midlands, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham plus Stansted from April and Leeds Bradford from May. A new route will also operate to Malta from Bristol Airport in 2022.
