IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE? TRY GOZO FOR A ROMANTIC GETAWAY

Posted on 11 February 2017

It’s always good to get away with that special someone. And with Valentine’s Day and the prospect of better weather approaching, we thought we’d take a look at the romantic side of our lovely island and tempt you to consider a special break for two on Gozo.

How appropriate that the name Gozo means “joy” in the dialect spoken by the Spanish (from Aragon) who took control of the island in 1282. They named Gozo well, as spending time here on our lovely island is sure to make you happy.

With 300 days of sunshine, small population, stunning scenery, and fascinating history, the island of Gozo makes a perfect romantic getaway. A few days on Gozo will make you slow down, de-stress, and pay attention to the important things in life – including your partner!

If yours is a budding romance, then Gozo will help to make your holiday together a special one. And if things are getting a little more serious, Gozo provides plenty of romantic locations for dramatic proposals, sun-kissed weddings, and relaxing honeymoons.

So, what does Gozo have to offer the romantically inclined?

The sunsets on Gozo are often spectacular and make a wonderful setting for a romantic picnic for two. Visit any local bakery and stock up on fabulous locally-made bread, ftira (Gozitan pizza), and other yummy treats. And why not include a bottle of locally made wine or beer?

The west coast of Gozo features a stunning coastline, especially around Dwerja, where you’ll find the famous Azure Window. Watching the sun descend to the sea here is truly magical. A popular spot for a picnic is the roof of the Dwerja Tower -and once the sun goes down you can watch the stars come out.

Further south along the coast of Gozo you’ll find the picturesque village of Xlendi – a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. You can also catch some fine sunsets

here, especially from the cliff tops just above the village. Xlendi Tower, a coastal watchtower dating back to 1650 makes a great picnic spot and you can get a superb view of the sunset from here.

Dinner for two with a view

A romantic dinner for two is always improved when you have a wonderful view to gaze at. Luckily, Gozo has many restaurants and bars that look out onto the sea. You might also be luck to find a restaurant with music too.

On the west coast, try the Azure Window in San Lawrenz which has great sea views.

In Xlendi on the south west coast, there are many little romantic places overlooking the sea. And if you want to watch the sunset while dining, try Da Manuel, which is situated near the Xlendi Tower and has spectacular views of the cliffs. Thee’s also

In Gozo’s capital, Victoria (Rabat), there are many good restaurants but if you want a great view of the island then why not try Ta’ Rikardu which looks towards the sea. And for a close-up view of the ancient fortified Citadel and some lovely countryside, try La Stanza Restaurant, a converted 400-year-old farmhouse.

On the south coast, in the busy port of Mgarr, try the Country Terrace and Veranda for good food and a view overlooking the picturesque harbour.

And in Marsalfon Bay, on the north coast of Gozo, try Qbajjar Restaurant and Arzella.

Private boat charter for a romantic dinner at sea

For a really special romantic dinner, how about a private boat charter? First swim at the Blue Lagoon in the late afternoon, then indulge in some Gozitan cheese and wine as the sun sets in the west. Later, moored in a secluded bay, you can dine on freshly caught fish. Sounds like heaven.

Fall under the spell of Gozo’s attractions

For couples who like to keep active, Gozo offers plenty of opportunities. Some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in the world can be found on Gozo’s west coast. Descending into the sparkling Mediterranean and marvelling at the beauty of Gozo’s underwater treasures, including reefs and caves, can be surprisingly romantic.

Or how about a romantic horse ride along a quiet beach? And strolling through the ancient lane ways of the Citadel, or exploring Gozo’s neolithic past at the UNESCO World Heritqage Site of the Ġgantija Temples can be surprisingly atmospheric. In fact, just about everywhere you go in Gozo can be romantic if you’re in the right mood!
